Update

  • Riley will be 3 years old in 3 days! I seriously don’t know where the time has gone! I’m trying my best to get things ready for his party, but I have SO much on my plate right now that I just don’t know if it’s all going to come together the way I want it to or not. I’ll let y’all know soon what’s occupying all my free time, but I’m not quite ready to spill the beans just yet.
  • Averly pee peed in the potty 2 nights ago! She is very interested in it because she always hears Riley talk about going. Sometimes I will randomly sit her up on it & she usually just plays & unrolls the toilet paper. But the other night she got real still with a blank look on her face, then pee peed! I was so excited I wanted to jump up & scream, but I didn’t want to startle her so I let her finish, then made a HUGE deal for her clapping & cheering. She tried again later that night, but since then no luck. I’m just going to take it as I did with Riley & not force anything, but always offer. It’ll happen when she’s ready.
  • She has also really been talking up a storm lately. She will repeat just about anything we say. Her favorite word right now is “Stat?” (what’s that?). She is going to be just like her brother wanting to know more about everything.
  • More words she’s saying regularly are:
    • “Wai-yer” (water)
    • “Bush” (bus) She will say this any time she sees a bus driving down the road.
    • “Shmurf” (smurf)
    • “Monsher” (monster) Playing with Riley’s monsters.
    • “Yesh maum” Which I love that she’s saying already.
    • “Ta wee” (sorry) She says this if she gets in trouble. ;0)
    • “Hee doh” (here you go) When handing us something.
    • “Doo toos” (Blue's Clues)
    • “Teers” (Cheers!)
    • “Somfin” (something) She got this from Riley because when we ask him what he wants to eat, he just replies “something” so now Averly has started saying it.
    • “A-wee” (Averly)
    • “Peesh” (please)
    • There is really sooo many more words she is saying that I can’t think of at the moment. Her vocabulary is expanding more & more every day.
  • Some cute things Riley has said recently:
    • “You make me sooo happy!” He is such a sweet boy!
    • “Dat’s Peter Hopin’ Tail”
    • “Can you do me a favorite? (favor) “Turn Av-ley’s yight off so she can sweep.” (sleep)
    • A few days ago we were in Hobby Lobby & he saw a Nativity scene. He pointed & said “The Bi-bul tells me so.” He says that any time he sees Jesus.
    • “Mama, God made dat fence…my undawears…da moon…and our car!”
    • He got onto Averly one day because she was turning the water on in my bathtub. Riley, being the protective big brother he is, grabbed her hand & said “Dat will burn you, Av-ley! Stop! E.O.P. Dat spells stop!”
  • Riley is very into the "Why? Where? What? How?" stage right now. Nothing has a simple explanation with this boy!
  • Picker Sisters is my new favorite show. It makes me want to create something from nothing every time I watch it!
  • I am obsessed with finding the perfect fabric for Averly’s big girl room. I LOVE Amy Butler fabric & am drooling over this bedding! Sigh.
Happy Wednesday!

The Mother of All Meltdowns

If there was an award to give the child who threw the biggest fit in a public place AND embarrassed her mom to the point of tears, it would be handed to this girl:

Picture 089

Yes, she looks so sweet & innocent but don’t let that cheesy grin fool you! Last week she was that child in Target that was screaming loud enough to make you think I had been torturing her. I can honestly say I have never been so embarrassed. I’m just now getting over it enough to write about it. And I want to write about it so she can read this one day & see what she put her Mama through that afternoon on July 28th, 2011!

The day started off great & both kids were in wonderful moods. I got my hair cut while my mom watched them, then she dropped them off at the end of my appointment at the salon. We went to Chick-fil-a & played, then came home & both kids took a great nap. When they woke up, I noticed we were running low on diapers so I figured we would run to Target real quick to grab some.

We get to Target, I put the kids in the basket & head to the diaper aisle. As soon as we get to our original destination, Averly decides she wants to run around instead of being in the basket. She starts whining & trying to climb out. Nothing too major. Yet. I grabbed a box of diapers & then thought I would go check out the summer clearance stuff in the back. Bad idea. As we made our way to the back corner of the store, Miss Thang decided she was going to get her way. One way or another. She squirmed out of the seat & was practically standing up so I moved her to the big part of the basket. That pissed her off more & this is where things got bad. REALLY bad. She kept trying to swing her leg over to get out. I’m holding her arm/leg/dress (whatever I can grab) with one hand & pulling the shopping cart with the other as I walked beside it. She’s now super mad at me & screaming. This continues and worsens as we make our way down the main aisle. People are starting to stare. Some are sympathetic “I know how you feel” stares, but most were “Shut that kid up” stares. You can tell who has kids of their own in situations like these. They tend to have a little more patience & sympathy for you.

Then she decides to really go for it. She leans over the cart & flips out. All within the blink of an eye. Remember though, I have a death grip on her arm so I had her the whole time. One lady saw it & screamed "Oh my gosh!" while lunging towards her to try & catch her. Then gives me a dirty look with her mouth open in shock. At this point, I’m more mad than embarrassed. I’m thinking “Really, lady? The whole point of her fit is that she wants out. I know her intentions. I’m not going to let her fall. I don’t need your hateful glare right now.”

This should’ve been the point where I just gave up & go check out. But the clearance stuff is only a couple more aisles down. So I keep going. I’m now holding her as she squirms out of my arms several times. Flipping positions, throwing elbows, kicking, and screaming. At the top of her lungs. Now it’s unavoidable. People are popping out of EVERY aisle & corner to come see the train wreck that’s happening. I had what felt like 4,000 eyes staring at me & my uncontrollable child. I gritted my teeth & gave her a very stern “talkin’ to” in her ear. Didn’t help. I threatened her with timeout, but she couldn’t care less. She’s 16 months old. She has no idea about the concept of timeout yet. So then I spanked her, but that only made things worse. I even tried bribing her with dolls. She just slapped them down. At the time I didn’t think it was humanly possible for her to get any louder or squirm any faster out of my arms, but she did. Then she pulled the "go limp" trick which is worse than the twisting. As I’m trying to get a better grip on her, we are now stopped in front of the aisle with boy toys. So Riley (who I could barely hear through all the chaos) starts yelling that he wants to look at the Transformers. More people are staring. I’m pouring sweat & am as red as the Target shopping cart.

I finally decided that I had lost this battle & we needed to leave ASAP. There was NOTHING I could do but let her finish her fit. No form of discipline was working. I turned around holding containing Averly under my arm like a clutch. She’s still screaming & by now, hyperventilating since she can’t catch her breath from all this. And we are in the back corner of the store. So I had to walk back through everyone while the fit pursues. Joy. And did I mention, it was 5:30 in the afternoon? So Target was packed from everyone getting off work. I'm so mortified that I start crying too. Riley's still yelling "I wanna yook at da Transformers!" & Averly's meltdown is at its peak.Y'all, it was just a big fat mess.

We finally made it to the checkout line after what seemed like a mile-long walk. A sweet lady that was about to check out let us go before her. She was obviously a mom who had been in my shoes before. She told me how pretty Averly was & all I could think to say was “She’s not acting very pretty!” but it was so nice of her to try & pay us a compliment in my time of distress!

We made it through the checkout & got to the car. I have never been so happy to see my car & be OUT of a store in my life! Of course, she was fine as soon as we got in. She turned the waterworks off & was all smiles. Little girl, little girl! She is a hard headed thing that does not give up easily. A year or so ago we never would have thought this. She was so laid back & easy going. Nothing really bothered her & she just went with the flow. Now? Not so much. She has a mind of her own that can’t be changed!

I’m hoping she’s just hitting the Terrible Two’s early! And praying we never have another fit like that again!

Mother’s Song

My heart is like a fountain true
That flows and flows with love to you.
As chirps the lark unto the tree
...So chirps my pretty babe to me.

There's not a rose where'er I seek,
As comely as my baby's cheek.
There's not a comb of honey-bee,
So full of sweets as babe to me.

Picture 024

There's not a star that shines on high,
Is brighter than my baby's eye.
There's not a boat upon the sea,
Can dance as baby does to me.

No silk was ever spun so fine
As is the hair of baby mine.
My baby smells more sweet to me
Than smells in spring the elder tree.

Picture 023

A little fish swims in the well,
So in my heart does baby dwell.
A little flower blows on the tree,
My baby is the flower to me.

The Queen has sceptre, crown and ball,
You are my sceptre, crown and all.
For all her robes of royal silk,
More fair your skin, as white as milk.

Picture 022

Ten thousand parks where deer do run,
Ten thousand roses in the sun,
Ten thousand pearls beneath the sea,
My babe more precious is to me.

More Fun Times at Bubba and ViVi’s

The kids stayed with my parents a couple days last week while I was working & TAG was out of town on business. My mom took pictures of some of the fun they had while they were there.

They played a little more in the bucket one morning before breakfast.

Picture 002Picture 004 Picture 005

Rode around on the lawn mower with Bubba. (One of their favorite things to do!)

Picture 008 Picture 009

After they dried off, they came inside & Riley helped ViVi make some fresh lemonade while Averly napped.

Picture 010

And tied flies with Bubba. Riley is so ready to go on a fishing trip with him!

Picture 012

Then they finished up with a good bath.

Picture 014 Picture 015Picture 018

They love going to their grandparents’ house! There is so much fun stuff for them to get into there!

Lucy’s Birthday Party

First of all, TAG got Riley his first pair of basketball shoes last week & they were both so proud of them. TAG had to get a picture of him in them. They are 3 sizes too big, but I thought it was sweet of Dada.

Picture 027

Saturday we went to my friend’s daughter’s Birthday party. Riley & Lucy are 3 weeks apart in age. Side note: I will have a 3 year old in 3 weeks!

We pulled up to their house & it started pouring. We ran inside & waited for it to slack up a little. Luckily, it did in just a few minutes & the sun started shining. Brittany did such a good job with everything. It was a carnival theme & so cute!

Waiting on the rain to leave.

Picture 030

Lucy’s cute cake & party favors. (The rain smeared the painted letters on her sign, but it was still precious.)

Picture 052Picture 051

Riley was so serious when it came to getting his face painted. Most kids asked for a balloon or a heart. Riley wanted a dinosaur.

Picture 047Picture 057

Riley waiting on his cake. Haha I love his face in this picture!

Picture 061Picture 064

Riley’s turn at hitting the piƱata.

Picture 067

He stuffed as much candy in his mouth as he could. Then choked & gagged right after I took this. Nice.

Picture 070

Sweet girl cheesing.

Picture 071

And he went back for more face painting. Another dinosaur.

Happy Birthday to Lucy! We had a great time at the party!
